Packed with charm | Endearing storyline | Great interactive features
It would be nice to see more gestures rather than buttons | Relatively short
Millie is once again starring on iOS devices in the latest interactive storybook following the cuddly canine. Unlike similar apps, the Millie series incorporates a real world dog into amusing situations. It’s a series geared towards kids, and now there’s book 3, which details Millie’s Crazy Dinosaur Adventure. This version maintains the personality, and charm infused into the previous entries, but expands the interactivity for a more endearing experience. The story revolves around Millie attending her friend’s birthday party, but forgets her present, so she makes a time machine to go back to the start of the party. The time machine goes back a bit further than that, all the way to prehistoric times presenting an all new era for Millie.
Every part of the app is designed to make kids care about each page, and the outcome. There’s quite a bit to discover beginning with an ornate art style that is layered with cute pictures, and sometimes videos of Millie in unique positions. New to book 3 is “Story Switch” mode, which lets you choose between three different scenarios to change the progression of the story. It’s a neat little twist that also offers incentive to reread the story a few times to change your choices. There are also little mini-games based on the plot changes offering a heightened level of interactivity that the Millie series hasn’t seen before. Each page is also infused with a hidden sticker, and there are over 20 stickers to try to collect.
The app also offers a lot of the little things including deluxe voice narration with highlighted text, or an option to read it yourself. There’s a neat bedtime mode that lowers the screen brightness, and sounds while disabling the game to just include the story. One of the best parts is that the app invites exploration whether it’s the mini-games, discovering the interactive elements, or finding the hidden stickers. It’s just a well made experience to really engage, and entertain younger audiences with a few quality additions to extend the duration of the app.
Millie’s Crazy Dinosaur Adventure ($0.99, Universal) is a great kids app that is an endearing experience throughout making it a should buy.
