When it comes to the iPad 3 vs. the Kindle Fire, the first question that comes to many people's minds is the 2.5x (minimum) premium for the iPad 3 worthwhile? To thoroughly answer that question, it's important to understand the differences and similarities between the Kindle Fire and iPad 3.

Specification/Feature Comparison

It is pretty easy to see that when it comes to the hardware war, the iPad 3 clearly has the upper hand. It is also clear to see that in the iPad 3 vs Kindle Fire battle the iPad clearly loses on price.

iPad 3

  • 9.7″ diagonal retina display touchscreen
  • Processor TBD
  • 16GB/32GB/64GB internal storage options
  • Battery life: hours of WiFi surfing or video
  • WiFi and 3G/4G models
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Priced from $499 to $829 (depending on hardware)

Kindle Fire

  • 7″ diagonal touchscreen
  • Dual Core Processor
  • 8GB internal storage
  • Battery life: 8 hours continuous reading and 7.5hrs of video
  • WiFi only (no 3G or 4G)
  • No cameras
  • Priced at $199

So what does this all mean? Should you buy an iPad 3 or a Kindle Fire? It all comes down to what you intend to do with the product. Just because this is a site focused on Apple products does not mean we will recommend you buy the iPad 3. Here is the bottom line in the Kindle Fire vs. iPad 3 debate

You should buy an iPad 3 if…

  • You are planning to do a lot of gaming on the tablet (better display, larger screen, faster processor)
  • You want to do video calls (only the iPad has dual facing cameras)
  • You want to use previously purchased iPhone apps on your tablet
  • You need access to data on the go when WiFi is not available
  • You have a bit more money to spend

You should buy a Kindle Fire if…

  • You want one of the best e-readers available but would also like some basic additional functionality
  • You want a tablet that is highly portable
  • You only want to spend a couple hundred dollars

Both products are very good at what they do which are generally very different things. Although there is some overlap in the area of surfing, email, and streaming video, generally speaking the iPad 3 and Kindle Fire were built to do different things.
