It was no secret that iPad 3 will be slightly thicker than iPad 2 to possibly compensate for battery "loss" due to retina display and a bigger processor. However, this is the first time we find out just how much thicker the new iPad is.
Via Macrumors: "Apple.pro now points [Google translation] to a new photo showing both shells being measured with a digital caliper. According to the photo, the iPad 2 rear shell measures in at 8.69 mm thick while the iPad 3 part comes in at 9.50 mm, a difference of 0.81 mm."
iPad 3 will come in 9% thicker than the iPad 2. It's still a lot thinner than the original iPad's 13.4mm thickness. With all things considered, most users will probably not even notice the difference in thickness… especially if they're preoccupied with shinier cameras, faster processor and retina display!
