Uh, no. My first thought on seeing that image was the iPad is in landscape mode, which is how most people use it. The physical home button provides a good "escape" mechanism, particularly for newbies / average users — don't know what's going on? Confused? Press the home button and get back to the screen with the apps. Apple may remove the home button at some point in the future, but I bet they'll preface it first with a gesture of some sort first, to get people used to the idea. That's as far as I'll go with this idea — introduction of a home button gesture while retaining the home button.
