Surface Pro 4 — The date is getting close. The fans are excited. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 is perhaps the most anticipated product of the year. Rumors upon rumors have circulated around the web on all aspects of the gadget. Furthermore, the announcement by Microsoft of an event that will be held on October 6th only flames the enthusiasm of people who have been waiting for more than a year for the future generation of the company’s Surface Pro line of tablets.
While the Surface Pro 4 today generates so much attention, it was not always the case for its predecessors, as the first two versions of the device were far from being a success for Microsoft. The original Surface Pro, released in February 2013, and the second version, the Surface Pro 2 were coldly received by the public in general and tech reviewers in particular. However, the third version, the Surface Pro 3, was different. It came with a lot of improvements and the public fell in love with it. It became very popular with professionals and students who are looking for a device that is neither a laptop nor a tablet but that can serve both functions adequately.
The Surface Pro 4 will surely improve on the SP3’s strength. It is being reported that it will in fact come in two versions. A 12-in model – similar to the current version – and 14-in model for those who want more space to do their work. Both versions should come equipped with Intel’s latest chip, Skylake, which can be used fanless, allowing manufacturers to build slimmer and more energy-conscious devices. The resolution should also increase. According to rumors, the larger Surface Pro 4 might even come with a 4k display.
Furthermore, the Surface Pro 4 will also come with faster SSDs, type-c USB, and Windows Hello. The latter is Microsoft’s biometric system that allows users to log in using their physiological features.
The Surface Pro 4 will also be equipped with Windows 10, Microsoft’s latest version of its flagship operating system. Released on July 29th, Windows 10 has been so far a success for Microsoft as more 70 million people have already installed the new software. It also comes with a lot of improvements over its predecessor Windows 8, which was in fact one of the main reasons for the failure of the first two versions of Microsoft’s Surface Pro line. With a feature called Continuum, Windows 10 also allows a user to easily switch between desktop mode and tablet mode, blurring the line between the tablet and the PC.
In terms of design, no massive changes are expected. The Surface Pro 3 is already a beautifully designed device, with an attractive metal body and useful ergonomics. The kickstand will stay as it is – or perhaps improve. The body might get slimmer, but don’t expect any radical change from Microsoft on the front.
With the popularity of the Surface Pro 3 growing, one can only expect the Surface Pro 4 to do even better. The biggest recognition of Microsoft’s efforts and success came two weeks ago when Apple released a new iPad called the iPad Pro. The latter shares a lot of features with the Surface Pro 3, including a keyboard, a stylus, and a sort-of kickstand. The Surface Pro 3 is also being copied by other vendors like Lenovo with its Miix 700 tablet and Dell, which is rumored to be preparing the unveiling of a similar device.
As a fan of the SP3, I can’t wait to see what the Surface Pro 4 will bring! What about you? What do you expect?
