New Apple Tool Lets You Ensure Resale iPad or iPhone Activation ...

Activation Lock

When Apple launched iOS 7, it added a security feature called Activation Lock that would prevent someone from erasing or activating a device without first entering the user’s Apple ID. It is enabled automatically when you turn on Find My iPad or iPhone. Because of this new feature, a device is rendered useless if it is resold while still activated. That’s why companies like Gazelle and NextWorth estimate your device’s value at “worthless” if you haven’t deactivated the feature.

Yesterday, Apple released a web-based tool that will allow you to check the status of an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and ensure that Activation Lock is not on.

Apple warns:

“Before you purchase an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from somebody else, make sure that Find My iPhone Activation Lock is turned off and the device is ready for you to use.”

All you will need is the device’s serial number, which is found in the Settings app under “General,” then “About.” You can also use the device’s IMEI, which is easier to find, but harder to read. It is imprinted on the backside of the device under the Apple logo in small print.

When you enter the number and then enter a verification code, you’ll be redirected to a page that will either let you know that Activation Lock is on and you’ll need an Apple ID and password in order to activate and use the device, or tell you that Activation Lock is off and the device will not require a password to be erased or reactivated.

Thanks to this tool, you can make sure a used iOS device you are bidding on through eBay or looking to buy on Craigslist, is useable. Otherwise, there won’t be anything you can do about resetting it as a new device.

If you are planning on buying a used device, be sure to ask the seller to give you the serial number or IMEI number so you can check for yourself.
