Leapin' Leprechaun Review - An Addicting Game For iPhone and ...
May 3rd 2012, 19:27

You can start playing an addicting little game released today in the iOS App Store, called Leapin' Leprechaun. Developed by Mobile Magnus, the game is kid friendly and filled with an animated little leprechaun named Paddy, pots of gold, rainbows and colorful scenery.

I took the game for a spin using my iPad 3 (er, the new iPad) and an iPhone 4. Let's dive right in.

Story

Everyone knows the story of what's at the end of the rainbow. Gold of course! The game follows Paddy, an animated leprechaun relinquishing his pots of gold one at time throughout the terrain of Ireland. From the developers:

"Although the gameplay
concept is simple, one can't help but notice the great traditional
Irish-themed details present in this game, such as the stunning Irish
landscape images you will see through the levels, as well as the
authentic-sounding voiceover for Paddy done by a 12 year-old Irish
boy, which is rather humorous."

Game Dynamics

Similar to the game Paper Toss, Leapin' Leprechaun follows the same principle. Although instead of a paper ball and a trashcan, you have a Leprechaun and a pot of gold.

Levels are spread across Ireland and you'll have to beat each one before travelling to the next. You'll have to flick Paddy into a pot of Gold before the next pot reveals itself. You win the level when you've reached all pots.

It's not as easy as it sounds. The pots are placed at different distances from the little fella. That, along with wind and rain conditions in advanced levels, will require a bit of focus to win each level. To win the game, you'll have to properly gauge the force and direction of your flicks.

Graphics and Sound

The game has heavy Irish roots that everyone will enjoy. The Irish landscapes are beautiful. Flicking Paddy, will cause him to fly up into the air then back down (hopefully into a pot of gold), all with a rainbow trail behind him.

The voice-over –performed by a 12 year old— is out right hilarious. Miss your mark and he'll let you know: "Shamrocks", "I won't be able to walk for a week!"

You can play the game without music and jabs from Paddy by going to the Settings Panel in the main menu.

Final Thoughts

The game is entertaining and kid friendly. Some games offer you a chance to progress even if you don't reach all goals in a level. This is not the case with Leapin' Leprechaun, so it's easy to get stuck at a level for a while. My suggestion would be to take your time in the first few levels to get used to the flicks. Maybe, in a future update, the developers will add a tutorial level at the beginning of the game to allow the player to get a feel for the game dynamics.

The full version of the app is $.99 while the Lite version is free, but is restricted to only a few levels. Check the game out and let us know what you think!
